Microsoft’s at E3 press conference streamed live on stage demonstration of its upcoming HoloLens headset. Rather than immersive virtual reality, HoloLens offers augmented reality – overlaying digital information on top of the real world.The demonstration featured a special version of Minecraft, shown off via a camera fitted with the same HoloLens technology as the Mojang employee playing the game. A flat table turned into a living Minecraft world, as blocks rose from the flat surface, allowing the world to be moved, explored and tinkered with as if it were actually in front of you. The view from the camera elicited audible gasps from the audience of games industry attendees.That wasn’t Microsoft’s only big announcement. Backwards compatibility between Xbox One and Xbox 360 was confirmed, meaning that from later this year your collection of Xbox 360 games will work on the new console. That includes digital titles from Xbox Live Arcade, and you’ll even be able to port across your saved games.There was good news for fans of legendary British studio Rare as well. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Rare Replay compilation was unveiled. Coming to Xbox One in early August, it contains 30 of the developer’s best loved titles, from early ZX Spectrum hits like Atic Atac, through Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and on to more recent classics such as Viva Pinata, the low-priced boxset looks to be an absolute treasure trove for retro gamers and newcomers alike.
